Britain is on flood alert after the Environment Agency warned that September 2006 could see the highest tides for twenty years. Coastal areas around the country have been warned to prepare for mass evacuations - a new electronic warning system is now in place. But the real risks come if the high tides are combined with stormy weather. That could mean massive flooding in the north west area around Blackpool; the Bristol Channel, including Cardiff; the south coast, in particular Portsmouth, Hayling Island, Hastings, and Littlehampton; the East coast from Hull, south towards the Thames Estuary - especially the East Anglia coast and its towns, such as Hunstanton.
