ENVIRONMENT / CANADA: Aerials of mines at Athabasca Oil Sands

Beneath Canada's forests are billions of gallons of oil - after Saudi Arabia, the second-largest reserves on earth. But to extract the extremely heavy crude oil from the bituminous sands, large areas of forest are destroyed to make way for open-cast mining. New "in-situ" mining technology is being introduced to address the industry's impact on the environment. Aerials of deforestation, surface mining, in-situ mining wells, processing plants and tailing ponds at the Athabasca Oil Sands. The tar sand mines are operated by Syncrude, Suncor and Shell. Picture is 16:9 anamorphic. HD (High Definition) tapes available. Camera Operator: Daniel Demoustier
