Hundreds of people have gathered on the beach at Branscombe to scavenge goods from the beached container ship MSC Napoli. The cargo vessel is stranded a mile out to sea off the Devon coast, heavily listing and its load slowly sliding into Lyme Bay. Legally, taking the goods is not looting, but salvage, and therefore not a crime if they are declared to the Receiver of Wreck. The cargo includes consumer goods such as motorbikes, car parts, barrels of sherry and ladies' shoes. Meanwhile an operation continues to prevent thousands of tonnes of fuel from escaping. A thin sheen of oil, four miles long, is already stretching out from the ship.
