Energy: biomass - 2007

Climate change, rising oil prices and a growing concern for future supplies have led to a growing interest in the potential for using biomass for energy purposes. In Europe, biomass exploitation for energy uses corresponds to 3,5% of the total energy consumption. The EU target of achieving a 12% contribution to total energy production from renewable energy sources by 2010, has led to a steady growth of the biomass market. To coincide with the 15th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition which will take place in Berlin on 7-11/05/2007, the European Commission's audiovisual service has prepared a video stockshot which will include: - Fields with rapeseed - Biogas production for cogeneration (heat + electricity) from crops and manure in Germany - Biogas production for local transport (buses) from vegetable (municipal) waste and sewage in Sweden - Cogeneration from wood providing district heating and electricity in Belgium
