EDUCATION: Watchdog criticises number of school tests

Constant tests for schoolchildren under 16 should be scrapped - according to an influential education watchdog. The General Teaching Council said the current system was failing to raise standards and was making overstressed students drop out of school. Teaching unions have backed the call for a complete overhaul - but the Government said it was firmly committed to national testing and performance tables
