As the schools re-open after the summer break, pupils at one West London secondary comprehensive are facing unprecedented levels of security, having to have their fingerprints taken on arrival. But, unlike metal scanners to stop weapons being brought into class and random drug testing, which already happens in some schools, the fingerprinting at Holland Park School is not about the pupils' safety inside school, but to crack down on truancy. That has led to civil liberties campaigners questioning what rights the school has to take their prints - and what potentially could be done with the information.
