German department stores are facing difficult times. Sales are plummeting, and some chains are close to bancruptcy. A focus on quantity rather than quality has arguably made the chains more and more like each other and less and less appealing to shoppers. The stores are also facing competition from American-style shopping malls with many speciality retailers, food courts and entertainment venues. They are fast catching on in Germany and may well be the way of the future. Grit Hofmann explored the shopping scene in Berlin.
