DEFENCE: Trident nuclear missile system: HMS Vigilant

It is Britain's nuclear deterrent, but it is not really independent of the Americans, the commander of one Trident submarine has told Channel 4 News. Trident was born in the days of the Cold War, but the current fleet of four nuclear powered submarines, one always on patrol, faces a less certain future. Tony Blair has pledged a new generation, at a cost of some twenty billion ponds, but the campaign against them is hotting up.
