DEFENCE: Inquest into death of Lance Corporal Matty Hull: death ruled unlawful

A coronor has ruled that the US pilots who opened fire on a British convoy in Iraq broke the rules of engagement. Their victim, Lance Corporal of Horse Matty Hull, should never have died. For Matty Hull's widow the verdict brings to an end years of struggle - to find the truth about her husband's death. But it brings with it a bitter sense of betrayal - by allies supposed to be fighting on the same side. Despite being criticised for its failure to co-operate with the inquest, the US military said the pilots involved in the friendly fire incident would face no charges.
