The flag at RAF Kinloss has been flying at half-mast, following the deaths of 12 aircrew. They were killed when their Nimrod reconaissance plane crashed near Kandahar in Afghanistan. A Royal Marine and an Army soldier also died. The commander at Kinloss said the airbase is in mourning - calling it 'a day no-one ever wants to experience'. The accident, still being investigated, has once again turned the country's attentions on a military community in grief. Nato says that more than 200 Taliban troops have been killed in a major military operation in southern Afghanistan. Three Canadians also died in Kandahar province, where Operation Medusa is centred. As the fighting raged, the Defence Secretary denied that British troops serving in Afghanistan were under-resourced following the deaths of 14 troops in a plane crash.
