Deaths in Madrid plane crash

A passenger plane has shot off the runway at Madrid's airport, killing a reported seven people. Confirmation of fatalities came from the Spanish government and the emergency services are giving early quotes as seven. TV footage shows smoke billowing from the plane after the incident at Terminal Four at Barajas airport. It was en route for Gran Canaria. There have been conflicting reports on whether the jet skidded off the runway while taking off or landing. A spokesman for a Spanish pilots' union was quoted as saying the plane belonged to the domestic airline Spanair.
