Deadly Storm Hits Belize, Guatemala

PlusDeadly Storm Hits Belize, GuatemalaDeadly Storm Hits Belize, GuatemalaThe Associated PressThe number of dead from the twin tropical storms that have struck Central America is now at least seven. And the rain is still causing flooding in Mexico. (June 3)The death toll continues to rise after devastating twin tropical storms slammed into Central America. At least seven people are dead after the remnants of Pacific Tropical Storm Alma swept over Belize. It happened hours before Tropical Storm Arthur roared in from the Caribbean Saturday at the Mexico-Belize border. In the southern part of the country-- witnesses said a couple and their 14-year-old daughter were killed in a flash flood early Monday. And their 12-year-old son is missing. The storm also damaged highways and washed out homes and a key bridge. In Guatemala, several rivers are being closely monitored because of concern about flooding. About 800 families have been alerted of a possible evacuation. Some schools in the region have been closed since the weekend. And in Mexico, a Gulf oil port is still closed because of strong winds and rough seas. That country exports roughly one-and-a-half million barrels of oil a day, mainly to the U-S Gulf Coast. Meantime, officials in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Tabasco reported thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes due to floods. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
