Hollywood directing duo the Coen brothers scored big at the Critics Choice Awards in California.Joel and Ethan Coen picked up the top gong for their gritty thriller No Country For Old Men which won best film, beating off competition from other hopefuls such as Juno and Into The Wild. The pair also shared the best director trophy, while one of the film's stars, Javier Bardem, was named best supporting actor.Daniel Day-Lewis was named as best actor for his starring role in There Will Be Blood, while Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood was awarded for composing the film's soundtrack.Legal thriller Michael Clayton, bloody musical Sweeney Todd and period drama Atonement, were all snubbed despite picking up five nominations each.Musical Hairspray, which also had five nods, was luckier and took home awards for best acting ensemble and best young actress for newcomer Nikki Blonsky. The star-studded ceremony went ahead just hours after the shock announcement that the Golden Globes Awards bash had been cancelled and replaced with a press conference as a result of the long-running Hollywood writers' strike.© Independent Television News Limited 2008.
