CRIME: Prison overcrowding: Government criticised as solutions sought

Prime Minister Tony Blair has defended both his Home Secretary and the government's record on prisons. Britain's jails are thought to be full with more than 80,000 inmates incarcerated. One suggestion has been to introduce prison ships like HMP Weare which has been moored in Portland harbour in Dorset for eight years. It was closed two years ago following criticism that it was a 'floating grey box' with 'a shortage of fresh air, light and space' and sold to provide accommodation for offshore oil workers. Vessels like this may be of limited use as HMP Weare could only house 400 prisoners.
