Comprehensive New Study Ranks American Cities In Volunteerism

Volunteering Isn't Just Nice, It's Necessary "Volunteering in America: 2007 City Trends and Rankings," is the first-ever report to take an in-depth look at volunteer rates among 50 of the largest American metropolitan areas. Contrary to what many expected, cities with the most active levels of community service were not the largest cities such as Los Angeles or New York City (which ranked among the lowest), but were instead concentrated in Middle-American hubs such as Minneapolis, Kansas City and Portland. The study further analyzed factors that would explain the disparity and found that community attachment -- such as home ownership -- drives greater levels of volunteering, while long commuting times may limit opportunities. In order to tackle tough problems and improve the quality of life in communities, volunteers are essential. And their hard work pays off. Areas with high volunteer rates are often linked to lower crime rates, higher levels of employment, more parental involvement, higher graduation rates, fewer parents in prison, less taxpayer monies spent on healthcare, and greater volunteer retention. Furthermore, the level of volunteering in a community can have a significant impact during natural disasters and other relief efforts, as areas with higher volunteer rates are better prepared to respond to disasters. The study suggests local leaders must mobilize new volunteers, foster retention and make their cities better places to live by creating and ensuring that volunteer opportunities are substantive and meaningful.
