Cockatiel Eviction

What do you do when you must leave your home--quickly--and you have an aviary full of birds that you can't take with you? Unfortunately, the man in this situation waited to contact Mickaboo until 1:25p.m. on Wednesday, July 30th, and told us he had until 7:00p.m. That night to vacate his foreclosed home--a mere five and one-half hours. If we couldn't help, he planned to open the door of the aviary housing sixteen cockatiels, letting them loose to survive in the "wilds" of South San Jose--they wouldn't have lasted long. Birds released in this way fall prey within just a couple of days to predators or starvation. Amazingly, volunteers dropped what they were doing and immediately rushed to the location. The owner had placed 4 of the birds, but 12 extremely frightened silver whitefaced cockatiels had to be caught and put safely in carriers! Two of the twelve were on the bottom of the aviary. They appeared to be splay-legged or injured. We needed to get them to a vet in the morning for immediate care. Another heroic Mickaboolian volunteered her garage and covered patio as a temporary fostering location. Though their owner no longer had a home, these birds were not left to their own devices on the streets of San Jose. They could sleep safely. Mickaboo has already found homes for four of the birds, but the work is not done. Longer term foster homes and/or heaven-sent adopters are needed for the other six birds. Money is needed for the vet bills for the two splay-legged birds. If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or being an "angel" for one or more of the birds, please, please do email us to let us know! Story by Patricia Blau
