Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick praised the makeshift England team that beat Germany 2-1 in Berlin. With Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Theo Walcott all ruled out by varying degrees of injury, central defenders Matthew Upson and John Terry both scored from set plays to seal England's fifth win in a row. Fabio Capello told his players he would be judging their ability to play at the highest level and Carrick is convinced the back-up proved they can stand in when required. Carrick said: "We've proved to everyone the strength we have in the squad. A number of the lads played well and they have given the manager food for thought. The competition is good. "I think we thoroughly deserved it. We had a number of chances to go 2-0 up. They came back into it but we kept going. "It wasn't easy out there. The pitch was quick and it was a bit windy but everybody did their best and we came out on top."
