Carbon capture and geological storage: archives

On 23/01/2008, the European Commission presented a major legislation package to combat climate change and improve the EU's energy security and competitiveness. The package includes a legislative proposal designed to establish an EU policy and legislative framework for carbon capture and storage to remove unwarranted barriers, manage environmental risks, and provide clarity, coherence and stability for investors across the EU. Carbon capture and geological storage is a technique used to trap carbon dioxide as it is emitted from large point sources. It is then compressed and moved to a suitable storage site where it is injected into the ground. This mitigation technique has significant potential for climate change, within Europe and internationally, particularly in countries with large fossil fuel reserves and a fast-increasing energy demand.
