The European Commission’s Energy policy plan, to tackle climate change, aims at a binding minimum target of 20% for the use of biofuels in diesel and petrol consumption in the EU by 2020. In Graz in Austria, the slogan ‘from the pan into the tank’ stands for a free collection system of waste oils from both restaurants (there are a total of 230 participants) and private households which is then recycled into biodiesel. The conversion to biodiesel takes place in a plant in Southern Styria. The biodiesel produced by the 2001 World Energy Globe award-winning SEEG plant in Mureck already fuels 135 of the Eco-drive project buses belonging to the public transport operator in Graz, thus considerably improving the city’s air quality.
