At least 29 people dead and hundreds of thousands of people are cut off from their homes after monsoon flooding in eastern India and Bangladesh. Monsoon flooding has killed at least 29 people in eastern India and Bangladesh, officials said on Monday (July 30). Hundreds of thousands remain stranded from their homes and villages. In the Indian states of Assam and Bihar, at least 24 people, including three children, were killed in weather-related incidents since Sunday morning, bringing the death toll to 75 in a week. Around four million people have been affected, with many seeking shelter on bridges, rooftops and high ground. Officials in neighbouring Bangladesh said half a million people were stranded in their homes while tens of thousands had found shelter in close to 100 relief camps. The floods in the low-lying nation now cover half its area, with troops in boats providing medicines and food to some marooned residents and evacuating others. More than 160 people have now died in Bangladesh this summer due to floods. Storms, landslides and monsoon flooding in South Asia this month alone has killed hundreds in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal.
