Australia's Queensland state remains on alert as firefighters battle to contain blazes. Emergency services say they have the majority of the fires under control but are warning residents to be prepared to evacuate their homes. The bushfire near Rockhampton in central Queensland caused the most concern over the weekend but looks to be contained. A fire at Lotus Creek scorched 70,000 hectares of land, while the outbreak within the Mount Archer National Park damaged 7000. The bushfire danger in much of Australia's Queensland state on Monday remained high to very high, according to officials, as some 14 blazes continued to burn across the state. While the immediate threat to residential areas had passed, there were isolated pockets of unburnt land and the fire was still burning, according to authorities. With a very high fire danger persisting across much of Queensland, fire bans were likely to be extended. The Bureau of Meteorology said Queensland would have generally fine weather, with southeast winds along the coast.
