Attorney General backs phone tapping evidence

The Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, has confirmed that the Government is looking at allowing phone-tap evidence in court. He said the jailing of five Mafia bosses in America had convinced him of the worth of phone intercepts and that they could be a "key tool" in the fight against crime, but he acknowledged that concerns registered by the security services would have to be addressed before the rules were changed.
