He's one of Britain's greatest architects, but for years his reputation was overshadowed by that of his more famous collaborators, Christopher Wren and John Vanbrugh. Nicholas Hawksmoor was a former pupil of Wren's who's best known for the churches he designed following the Great Fire of London, but he also acquired the nickname, 'the Devil's Architect' because of his use of pagan symbols.
