Designed over a century ago as "a cathedral for books", the gothic masterpiece of Manchester's John Rylands Library is to officially reopen on 20th September 2007 after a three-year, 16 million pounds refurbishment. The Library's collection - including the oldest surviving piece of the New Testament - has been preserved in a Cheshire salt mine during the building works. It will now go on display in state-of-the-art storage areas.
