Ariana Katovich - Brower Youth Awards 2000

Ariana created the Shoreline Preservation Fund -- a ballot initiative for the students at UCSB which asked students to commit to giving $3.00 per quarter to help fund shoreline protection, preservation, restoration, education and research. The initiative passed overwhelmingly and now distributes over $180,000 annually for shoreline preservation. Much of the funding goes to undergraduate and graduate student doing scientific research and projects related to the protection of the Shoreline. The group has also used the funds to prevent a piece of land near campus know as the North Parcel from development and it remained a habitat for the endangered burrowing owl. "The result of our project is that many others with expertise, passion, dedication and vision get the tools they need to preserve, protect and restore the natural world and it's complicated systems." Ariana currently directs the Restoration Initiative at Earth Island Institute, funding restoration projects along the southern California coastline
