Antigua police question suspects

Antigua police say they have interviewed a number of "persons of interest" but do not yet have a suspect for the murder of a British woman on her honeymoon in Antigua.Doctor Catherine Mullany, formerly Bowen, was shot in the head at a luxury resort on the Caribbean island during a botched robbery. The 31-year-old's husband Benjamin, a physiotherapist, was also gunned down and remains critically ill in hospital.A Ministry of Tourism spokesman said the couple's families are expected to arrive in Antigua later. He said they are being assisted by island government officials and Foreign Office representatives.Antigua Police spokesman Inspector Cornelius Charles said no murder weapon has been found and so far officers have not spoken to anyone who saw the offenders but have spoken to people who heard the crime being committed.Mr Charles said police were putting "every resource" into tracking down Mrs Mullany's killer, adding that the public response had been very good."Some of those calls are not necessarily leading to anything tangible at this time, but we do embrace the fact that people are calling and giving us information about things they suspect," he said."That's a good sign because people are taking this personally - people on Antigua are outraged at this."He could not confirm how many people had been questioned but said it was "more than likely" that the killing happened in a botched robbery.Earlier Andy Liburd, news editor of the Antigua Sun, said police had probably pulled in at least 14 persons.Meanwhile the head nurse in the intensive care unit at Holberton Hospital said there had been "no change" in Mr Mullany's condition. She said he had not undergone any surgery but added: "I cannot verify the nature of his injuries."She also would not comment on reports he is brain dead and in a coma after a bullet entered his neck and travelled up through his skull. The newlyweds, from Pontardawe, near Swansea, South Wales, were attacked in their holiday cottage at the Cocos Hotel and Restaurant in the early hours of Sunday morning. They had arrived in the Caribbean on July 14 after getting married in the Swansea Valley village of Cilybebyll two days earlier, and had been due to return home on Monday.A brief statement from Mrs Mullany's parents, released through South Wales Police, said: "We are deeply shocked and devastated at the recent events in Antigua and are struggling to comprehend what has happened to Ben and Catherine."We appreciate the support of our family and friends and would ask the media to respect our privacy at this difficult time."Local media reported a spree of shootings on the island at the weekend with at least two other people attacked by masked gunmen.
