Angelina Jolie has revealed that she jumped at the chance to play a monster's mummy in her latest flick, Beowulf.Beowulf is the oldest known tale written in the English language but it was set in Scandinavia, where it was originally composed.Director Robert Zemeckis has brought the Norse legend of Beowulf to life with similar technology he used on The Polar Express to capture live actors whose performances are then digitally animated.Angelina said: "I got a call that Robert Zemeckis was doing something and I pretty much said yes then because I think he's a really interesting film-maker, he's always doing something original."I heard it was Beowulf and I was being offered the mother and the monster and I couldn't think of any reason not to. It sounded great."Needless to say, Jolie's character isn't exactly the unattractive monster of reputation, but a temptress too.She added: "It was such fun to play. I saw it as a mother and when I read it I liked her because I thought she loves her boy. Her boy happens to be a giant monster but that's the baby and anybody who hurts her baby she'll kill them."A king of the Geats, Beowulf (played in the film by Ray Winstone) battles three enemies - a monster, Grendel, who is terrorising the people; Grendel's mother (Jolie) and later, in his old age, a dragon.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
