The European Commission endorsed the nomination of Androulla Vassiliou as the new Member of the EC in charge of Health, after her predecessor Markos Kyprianou, appointed Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus. She will appear before the European Parliament on 1/04/2008 for an informal hearing before taking up her new post. She is to serve out the remaining year of Kyprianou's term in the European Commission and will have to tackle EU policies, including ones to cut down on smoking and the growing trend of obesity in Europe. Androulla Vassiliou, a lawyer by profession, served as a Member of the House of Representatives of Cyprus for two terms between 1996 and 2006 and served on the European Affairs Committee and on the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Cyprus and the EU. She is married to George Vassiliou, former President of the Republic of Cyprus (1988-1993) and Chief Negotiator for Cyprus' accession to the EU.
