James Anderson is expected to miss England's entire Test series against Sri Lanka as he has a stress fracture in his lower back. The Lancashire bowler was likely to be part of the team - as he played in the final Test against India in Mumbai - with Steve Harmison ruled out of the first Test which begins at Lord's on May 11 with a shin problem. Harmison is still recovering from that injury and is not expected to be fit for six weeks. Lancashire coach Mike Watkinson said: 'It's a huge blow to Jimmy. He's worked hard and patiently at his cricket to get back into the Test and one-day environment and obviously was hoping to be involved with England right through this summer but he is a fighter and he will get all the help possible at Old Trafford to overcome this setback.' Liam Plunkett is expected to be called into the Test squad to replace Anderson and Harmison. Captain Michael Vaughan and spinner Ashley Giles are already ruled out, so Lancashire's Sajid Mahmood or Worcestershire Kabir Ali are also in contention to be named in the squad on Sunday. Chairman of selectors David Graveney explained: 'Following the injuries to Simon Jones and James Anderson, the selectors have decided to withdraw Sajid Mahmood from the Sri Lanka tour match for tactical reasons as he is in contention to play in next week's first Test. 'Liam Plunkett is also under consideration for the first Test, but he will play for England A as Durham do not have a four-day game this week and this will provide him with further match practice. 'Jon Lewis and Stuart Broad have both shown fine early-season form for their counties and I'm sure they will be keen to make the most of this opportunity against Sri Lanka.'
