-In 1968 a revolutionary group called Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) began to take over Peru. Using guerilla warfare, the group was able to bring 1/3 of the country under military rule. -Sendero Luminoso forced a complete breakdown of democracy and began military campaign of brutality.-Founded in 1968 by University Professor Abimeal Guzman, Sendero Luminoso's main goal was to kill all representatives of the modern state and destroy all foreign influence. -The Peruvian Army's response became uncompromising. They punished peasant communities suspected of shielding the guerillas. Their only tactic was to attack brutality with brutality.
