Amb. John D. Negroponte World Affairs Councils of America - Washington, D.C. Ambassador John D. Negroponte speaks at the World Affairs Councils of America National Conference in Washington, D.C. Ambassador Negroponte was sworn in as the first Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on April 21, 2005. Previously, he had been serving as United States Ambassador to Iraq since June 28, 2004. From September 18, 2001, until his appointment to Iraq, Ambassador Negroponte served as the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
