Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika gave French footballer Zinedine Zidane the highest distinction of the state, the medal of national merit during an official ceremony at Palais du Peuple on Wednesday (December 13). "Because you constitute a model for the algerian youth, President of the Republic has decided to give you the medal of national merit, " an official said during the ceremony attended by members of the government and ancient stars of Algerian football. During his tour to his ancestral homeland, Zidane visited projects he helped to fund to alleviate people suffer following the 2003 earthquake in the Boumerdes region that killed 2,300 people. The medal, said the communique is a "recognition of the respect and admiration you have showed to the algerian people that you belong to."
