Around 50 tonnes of government aid was sent to the northeast of the country, as India says it is has suggested plans for internally displaced people to flee the conflict zone in Sri Lanka. Hundreds of thousands of people remain trapped in the conflict area between the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil Tigers of Eelam. Troops are battling to crush the rebel forces in the northeast of the country, in an area that has shrunken to 142 square km (55 sq miles) according to the army.
