Agriculture Products Quality

On 28/05/2009, the European Commission presented a communication on EU agricultural products quality policy, following last year's consultation on the Green Paper, on which more than 560 contributions were received, from October 2008. European agricultural producers have to follow some of the most stringent requirement in the world. Moreover, they use their special skills and savoir-faire to provide their products, with individual qualities which give them added value. The producers need to communicate this to consumers to ensure they receive a fair return for their efforts. They should therefore be able to make use of all existing ways to do this such as: marketing standards, geographical indications, organic farming, but also private and regional food quality certification systems. The objectives of the revised quality policy, are to improve communication between farmers, purchasers and consumers on qualities of agricultural products, to strengthen the coherence of labelling schemes and other quality policy instruments, and to reduce the complexity of the present day framework. To illustrate this, the Audiovisual Service is producing an infoclip which will include: - labelling of agricultural products, emphasising the different systems which promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and European foodstuffs.
