Agatha Joseph sits down with Breakthrough to tell the hardships her daughter endured while being in detention for three years. A few years prior, her curious 16-year-old daughter, a greencard holder, smoked a joint, and was charged with a $50 fine. After coming back from vacation in the Caribbean several years later, she faced mandatory detention for the same marijuana violation she received when she was younger. She was a victim of double jeopardy. Agatha tells that while in detention, her daughter was subjected to unsafe conditions. She speaks of one frightening day in which a fire broke out in an over-crowded gymnasium. There were 200 people, one exit, and no way out.
