Diabetes is a major health concern in the African American community, as nearly 15 percent of all African Americans over age 20 suffer with the condition. According to the American Diabetes Association, African Americans are almost two times as likely to have diabetes, and are 1.4 times as likely to be obese, a major risk factor for the disease, compared to non-Hispanic whites.
