Afghanistan is going through the bloodiest period of violence since U.S.-led coalition troops overthrew the Taliban government in 2001. Taliban guerrillas are mostly active in southern and eastern areas where more than 1,700 people have been killed this year in attacks by militants, drug gangs and in operations by foreign forces. Eight people were killed and 16 wounded in a car bomb in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Monday, the day when NATO forces took over security of the volatile south from U.S.-led forces.
