Six troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and three Afghan soldiers were killed in an ambush by insurgents in eastern Afghanistan on Friday (November 9). Eight ISAF troops and 11 Afghan soldiers were also wounded in the fighting, ISAF Brigadier General Carlos Branco told reporters on Saturday (November 10). Insurgents attacked the patrol with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire from multiple positions. Most ISAF troops based in the east of the country are American, but the statement said the force was withholding the nationalities of the dead soldiers pending notification of next of kin. Violence in Afghanistan has steadily escalated since the Taliban relaunched an insurgency drive two years ago. More than 6,000 people have been killed since then.
