About Hammers. The most common hammer is a claw hammer. It has a flat steel head and claw in the back for pulling nails. Some hammers have a textured head to help grab the nail - framing hammer. Most have a solid wood handle but can have fiber glass or steel handles with rubber coating. The Ball peen hammer is used for metal working. The Peen can be used to shape metal, beating a curve shape into a piece of sheet metal. A tack hammer is commonly used in upholstery for small nails or tacks. A rubber mallet can be used for adjusting large objects. It does not leave scars like steel hammers.
