A look at the 2010 celebrations worldwide

Hardy revellers across the country have braved freezing temperatures to welcome in the new year with spectacular fireworks displays in London and Edinburgh. More than 200,000 people had gathered on the banks of the River Thames to hear Big Ben strike midnight, while thousands of others joined Hogmanay celebrations in Glasgow and Edinburgh. London's fireworks were held at the London Eye and mayor Boris Johnson said the dazzling display would show the world that "the most exciting city on Earth" is looking forward to the future with "optimism and energy". A dry night with mainly clear skies provided onlookers with a perfect view of the seven-and-a-half minute display in London. Up to 80,000 people were ushering in the new year at the huge outdoor celebration in Edinburgh, where temperatures fell to a biting minus 6C by midnight. Partygoers in central London enjoyed a comparatively toasty 3C. Earlier those attending the Concert in the Gardens in Edinburgh were entertained by Codeine Velvet Club and then pop act Noisettes. The crowd went wild for 80s ska favourites Madness, dancing along to hits such as Baggy Trousers and One Step Beyond. In Glasgow 10,000 revellers packed into George Square for the city's sell-out Hogmanay party, headlined by Deacon Blue before 2010 began with a fireworks display over the City Chambers. But heavy snow forced organisers to cancel the new year celebrations in Inverness. More than 3,000 police officers were on duty in central London as part of a huge operation to deal with the crowds. Officers in London made a total of 78 arrests by 3.30am. Eighteen people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly, 16 for assault, 14 for public order offences, 11 for possession of drugs, four for immigration offences, four for handling stolen goods and three for sexual offences.
