9/12/2008 CommuterTrain/Freight Train Collide outside Los Angeles

We are watching this rescue effort unfold. This train left Union Station Friday at 3:30pm bound for Moorpark in Ventura. Many people commute from downtown LA up to Ventura, on Metrolink. This crash occured in the city of Chattsworth, near the 118 Fwy and Topanga Canyon Blvd. It is tragic, and I'm sure death came fast to those who did die, as the impact was severe. There was a mushroom cloud, when the collision happened,at 4:32pm. There were many injuries and many were in shock and described the impact as hitting a brick wall. The Metrolink train was being pulled by its engine as opposed to pushed. This type of collision is called a telescopic collision. The Metrolink Commuter train was going full speed, it is unkown whether the freight train was moving. Ten confirmed dead at this time 8:30pm PST, 50-60 injured, rescue continues, with LA fire department extricating people from the first car. LAPD, LAFD and Los Angeles County Sherrif are working in seamless co-ordination. The Commuter trains 450 ton engine was rammed into the first passenger car. The commuter train was most likely going 55mph. There were a total of three commuter cars. It was train #111, and the concern is that there are no records of the names of people on the train only an estimate of approximately 350 people. There are a few in hospitals at this time on respirators. More updates to come check back. 9:00pm. Recovery/rescue continues dogs were brought in to assist firefighters, it has been 6 hours. They are attempting to reach pockets in the mangled passenger cab. Things look grim at this time however it has not been called a recovery mission yet. Signing off@ 9:00PM.
