A little box with two 'x's inside and then a big 'e'ish symbol equals 'wung ba' which translates to internet cafe. It is an incredible feeling to have uncovered this strange, secret language (secret only from me it seems) and walk confidently into a random place with these characters actually knowing where you're going and what you're doing. [Only about one in 25 internet cafes will actually have any English text on signage]. Rather than looking past all the squiggly characters to seek out pictures, english text or cartoons to make sense of where I am - I've started to try to actually look at the blocks of Chinese to see if there are any other characters I see often which I can start to learn. Its all very exciting experiencing this quiet breakthrough... Tai'an is a nice little town devoted to its sacred 1545m mountain Tai Shan. Tai Shan is the most revered of China's five sacred Taoist peaks, and apparently the most climbed mountain on earth. This is highly believable as we shuffled up the mountain steps alongside about 5 million Chinese men, women and children of ALL ages.
