26761 Ex NFL Quarterback and Cardiac Surgeon Provides High Tech...

Ex NFL Quarterback and Cardiac Surgeon Provides High Tech Cardiovascular Screening Program for Former Pro Football Players During Super Bowl Week Playing professional football is an exciting, financially rewarding way to earn a living, but it is also extremely physically demanding. Many players retire from professional sports with injuries that plague them throughout their life. In fact, it is a widely-held belief that the average life expectancy for a professional football player that played 5 years or more in the NFL is around 56 years, more than 10 years less than the average American. Archie Roberts MD, retired cardiac surgeon and former NFL quarterback for the Cleveland Brown and Miami Dolphins, understands the ongoing health issues these men face and the importance of preventive medicine. Dr. Roberts heads The Living Heart Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has provided screening for over 1,000 current and former professional football players. During Super Bowl week, the Foundation will be sponsoring a free cardiovascular screening for 60 former NFL players in Miami Beach. The program will be held at the headquarters of the South Beach Preventative Cardiology. The screening will include noninvasive testing of the athletes' central blood pressures, the blood pressures at the heart, with SphygmoCor, a new technology from AtCor Medical. Studies have identified high central blood pressures as an early predictor of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke.
