25th Anniversary of Orphan Drug Act

The Orphan Drug Act has improved the quality of life for Americans suffering from rare and complex diseases like acute porphyria, which is often overlooked because its symptoms can mimic other conditions. Fortunately, in 1983 Panhematin - or hemin for injection - now made by Ovation Pharmaceuticals, became the first drug approved under the Act and provided acute porphyria patients with new hope.
