----- Article in the well known Durban magazine, called 'Get-It', of September 2009. ----- Known as 'KZN's Mr Boeremusiek', Kloof's Éd Dés Prés is proud of his heritage and the music that is a cornerstone of Afrikaner culture. He takes David Knowles on a fascinating narrative journey of boeremusiek, tradition and playing for the likes of Thabo Mbeki. With a personal collection of 72 concertinas, there is no doubting Éd Dés Prés' passion. He is at his happiest when sitting at his home in Kloof, concertina in hand, playing an all-time 'boeremusiek' classic. His eyes light up and his face becomes animated as he retells stories that stem from his own family history. "My grandfather, on my mothers side, Stoffel Viljoen, was a well known concertina player, and had his own Boere music band during the 1930's -1940's, which was also well known in the then 'Transvaal', and adjoining provinces, where he played 'Boeremusiek' exclusively, at gig's all over the said provinces. When they practiced, I was always hanging around, listening to the 'Boeremusiek', and developing a deep respect and love for this unique type of Afrikaans cultural music, and the unique sound of the concertina, which is mostley used as the lead instrument in 'Boeremusiek'. Ironically though, I chose a guitar as my first musical instrument, as it was much cheaper, easier to play and to get hold of, than a concertina, which I acquired in standard four, from my father, when I was 12, for finishing top of my class ...
