In the October 21 $100,000 Remington Green Stakes at 1-1/16 miles over the turf, the Irish-bred Ascertain came off a nearly six-month layoff to win by a half-length. The talented 6-year-old owned by the Chattawoeya, Tenn. Partnership of Mrs. S.K. Johnston, Jr., Paul Dixon and Dr. Gene Voss, stalked the lead until the field of 11 left the final turn before taking the front. Trained by Niall O'Callaghan and ridden by Larry Melancon, Ascertain fended off a charge from Red Rock Creek and Smooth Bid to prevail. The running time was 1:43.52. A winner of a Grade 3 event earlier this year, Ascertain didn't disappoint as the 8-5 favorite, paying $5.20 to win, $3 to place and $2.60 to show. Red Rock Creek, stepping up to stakes company after many victories in starter handicap events, paid $11.60 to place and $5.40 to show. Smooth Bid, winner of the 2004 MEC Mile, paid $4.20 to show. The win in the Green was the eighth from 24 career starts for Ascertain, an Irish-bred by Intikhab from Ahonoora (GB) mare Self Assured (Ire). The gelding made $60,000 to run his lifetime earnings to $434,232.
