12-year-old from VT heads to D.C. for spelling bee

NEWBURY, Vt. (AP) - Timothy Webb hopes "binoculars" end up being the first step toward seeing his way clear to being named one of the top 50 spellers in the country. The 12-year-old home schooler from Newbury spelled that word correctly in March to win the Vermont state spelling bee and a trip this week to Washington for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Webb says his goal is to make the top 50 of 293 contestants. He's also planning while in the nation's capital to tour the U.S. Capitol building, the Washington Monument and the National Archives. read more
