(0526 CR M01)TICK BITES KILL 4 IN C CHINA

(0526 CR M01)TICK BITES KILL 4 IN C CHINA DATELINE: May 26, 2011 LENGTH: 00:01:13 PKG INTRO Four people have died from tick bites in central China's Henan Province this year. China Report has the details. PKG The four fatalities are among the 70 reported cases of human granulocytic anaplasmosis, or HGA, since March 31, when the first case was reported this year. HGA reduces white blood cell and platelet counts in the blood, leading to organ failure and death. It can cause people to feel nauseous and have a fever. The disease is curable if treated quickly. But the exact cause of the disease hasn't been pinpointed. What is now known is that some ticks carry the disease and people who are bitten can be infected. Local authorities say all the cases were reported in the city of Xinyang, where the local environment suits ticks. The provincial Health Department has distributed treatment and control plans to local governments and sent experts to give on-site advice. Xinya Powered by www.newslook.com
