(0524 CR M07)THREE GORGES POWER DATELINE: May 24, 2011 LENGTH: 00:00:52 VO The first underground power unit at the Three Gorges dam started generating electricity this week. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest hydropower project; with a underground hydropower station that was built in 2001. The station contains six units with a 700,000 kw capacity each. The working power unit will harness the water discharged during the flood season on the Yangtze River, and therefore partially ease the power shortage on downstream sections of Yangtze River . The unit has been undergoing 72 hours test runs to ensure it match the operational standards. The power unit works depending on actual situation for cooping with upcoming flood season. At the mean time, the Three Gorges Dam increased water release to ease the drought plaguing downstream regions which are one of main grain production areas of China. Powered by www.newslook.com
