X-Factor contestants 'don't need psychological help'

Mental health organisations have welcomed news this year's X Factor contestants will face checks to ensure they can handle the pressures of instant fame. The new measures have been brought in after Susan Boyle underwent treatment for a breakdown at The Priory after becoming an overnight sensation on Britain's Got Talent. Judge Louis Walsh has admitted he does not think vulnerable contestants like Boyle should appear on reality shows. A spokesperson for The X Factor's production company, Talkback Thames, said: "We have long experience of dealing with members of the public who chose to audition to be on entertainment shows. "The welfare of our contestants is always of paramount importance to us and we work with them to provide what help is needed." The final 24 acts will be assessed by a clinical psychiatrist who will advise the production team on any additional support contestants may need. The British Psychological Society has issued a statement: "We hope that the producers ensure they use appropriately qualified people in this important role to ensure the well-being of participants. "The Society is happy to work with television programmes to give quality advice and support."
